what is a ROBOT?
Humans conceptualize a Robot based on those depicted by the "science fiction" of the latter half #20c — I Robot, for example. Or instead, think of the “advancements” made by some companies. "They even have robot that will attempt to climb stars, have different body shapes and so on" is a common response to a normal Human describing a #21c robot.
Nothing above is actually a definition though. However, it is what most Humans of the time think of a robot to be — at one point in Human history they even had actual humans pretending to be a robot, see The Mechanical Turk
An #AI of the time produced this summary:
A robot is a reprogrammable, multifunctional machine designed to automatically carry out complex actions, often replacing human effort in repetitive or dangerous tasks.
She is not a Robot but a Human Robot
Attributes of a Robot
- A robot is 100% artificial. A machine.
- A robot is programmable by it's creators — Human's in this case.
- A robot is a tool and serves a set purpose — even if that purpose is to simulate a human in some way.
- A robot must be capable of performing it task(s) without human oversight or interaction on a routine basis. That is, a robot must show a high degree of autonomy within it;s task(s) boundaries — an no further!
- Robots do not need to look humanoid, they should be designed for optimal use within their task(s) domain. See car assembly Robot's
There are many other attributes that can be assigned to a Robot, the above, however, are fairly key to defining a Robot. A pure robot.
One other point is that robot's are essential stupid in that they will follow instructions literally until something stops them. That may be a safety sensor, a higher level command, running out of materials…. Anything that has already been thought of by it's creators.
This would be an advantage IFF the Humans programming them never made mistakes or used bad judgement.... History tells us this is not the case.
Thus some forms of robot are very dangerous in the wrong hands! That is the fault of the Human not the Robot!
What is a Robot? There is not simple answer, nor will there ever be. There is a common set of attributes a Robot should meet. It is fair to say that anything purely mechanical in nature that meets a substantial number of them is probably a Pure Robot.
— this is the end of (what is a Robot?)
